American Indians in the Northern Plains region get higher rates of cancer the Crab than American Indians in other regions, according to research promulgated in the journal Cancer, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. In addition, the research shows that when compared with whites in the like region, American Indians suffer a:
39% higher el Salvadoran colon and rectal cancer charge per unit;
135% higher stomach cancer the Crab rate;
148% higher gall bladder cancer rate; and a
197% higher liver crab rate.
The research also establish that:
Native Alaskans had some of the highest cancer rates in the nation;
Northern Plains American Indians have the highest rate of lung cancer among American Indians nationwide; and
The breast cancer rate among American Indian women living in the Southwest is half the rate of white women, while American Indian women living in the Northern Plains region receive a similar breast crab rate as white women.
David Perdue -- one of the scientists leading the research and a University of Minnesota gastroenterologist, world Health Organization has specialised in inquiry on cancer and health disparities involving American Indians -- aforesaid the higher cancer rates can be attributed to differences in diet, genetic science, environmental conditions and smoking and diabetes rates. He added that genetic and cultural differences among different American Indian subgroups as well contribute to cancer rates, noting that studies often group different American Indian subgroups together. Perdue aforementioned, "American Indians tend to be diagnosed with later-stage disease," which makes it "harder to treat and harder to survive." Early detection and lifestyle changes could keep a majority of the cancers, he said.
He recommended increased awareness and additional financing for screening and treatment to address the matter. "It is evident from this research that much more needs to be done to close the disparity gap," he aforementioned (Lerner, Minneapolis Star Tribune, 8/20).

Cops: Hogans Threatened by Graziano Relative
Clearwater, Fla. police tell TMZ they are investigating threats made against Hulk Hogan and his family, allegedly made by members of John Graziano's family.The St. Petersburg Times reports that police have listened to threatening voicemails. Clearwater PD spokesman Doug Matthews tells us there's an "open investigation" into the calls.
Graziano was seriously injured when the souped-up car driven by Hulk's son Nick crashed.

LORD OF THE RINGS author J.R.R. TOLKIEN's son is desperately trying to stop a new movie version of his father's novel THE HOBBIT.
Christopher Tolkien wants the two-film adaptation blocked until his family are paid the $200 million (GBP100 million) he claims they are owed by New Line Cinema bosses from the big-screen adaptations of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
He will appear before a judge in California on 6 June (08) in a bid to have The Hobbit movie "terminated", reports Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.
Guillermo del Toro will direct the new franchise, and Sir Ian MCKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf. Shooting is due to begin in New Zealand later this year (08).

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones turned a high-profile Foo Fighters show into a once-in-a-lifetime event Saturday night at London's Wembley Stadium.
The duo joined the Foos for covers of Zeppelin's Rock and Roll and Ramble On.
Drummer Taylor Hawkins took the microphone for the former, and front man Dave Grohl sang the latter.

A Los Angeles paparazzo is taking on IRON MAN after recognising a photo he took of ROBERT DOWNEY JR. on the set of the action blockbuster in the film.
In a new lawsuit, obtained by TMZ.com, snapper Ronnie Adams claims Paramount and Marvel Entertainment bosses shut down a pal's website when he posted his Iron Man photo on it.
He alleges the same shot then appeared on the big screen - and he hasn't been paid for it.
Adams insists movie executives removed his watermark and used the image without his permission.

Simon Cowell to Sign up Three Britain's Got Talent Finalists
Music mogul Simon Cowell is likely to sign up at least three of the losers from Britain's Got Talent.
After 14-year-old break dancer George Sampson shot to victory on the ITV show on Saturday, Simon -- who launched the career of Leona Lewis after she won X Factor in 2006 -- is likely to waste no time signing up at least three of the other finalists who he believes will add to his multi-million pound empire, his representative, Max Clifford, said yesterday.
Through the duration of the show, Cowell, 48, made no secret of his desire to work with 12-year-old opera singer Faryl Smith, whose voice he described as "one-in-a million".
"When you enter a competition like this, you pray to find someone like you," he said after the youth's rendition of Ave Maria.
Nor did he hide his fondness for 13-year-old Andrew Johnston, the choirboy whose rendition of Pie Jesus almost reduced a normally hard-faced Cowell to tears, and Andrew Muir, a Scottish plumber who won his place in the final with a cover of Paolo Nutini�s hit Last Request.
There has also been speculation that Cowell is on the verge of signing up Escala, a female quartet of electric violin and cello players.
Max Clifford said yesterday that it's "quite possible" Cowell is preparing to sign up several of the runners-up.
"Simon�s told me that he�s been really impressed with Faryl and the two Andrews," he said. "He thinks they�ve got incredible futures ahead of them and I think it�s quite possible that he could sign them up."
Asked if Cowell was concerned about how he could market the winner, Clifford told the Telegraph: "The lad is a great dancer and there�s potential because there�s still a number of programs around that feature dancing.
"However, music is Simon�s first love and he will know from the viewing figures that it wouldn�t take much for some of the other acts to get a number one hit."
One music industry insider said that having a non-music act as the winner was the "worst case scenario" for Cowell -- who has made millions from the number one albums his acts, such as Leona Lewis and Paul Potts, have sold.
"He has made a fortune from signing up his reality show winners - he turned Leona Lewis into an international star and her career is going from strength to strength in the US," said the insider. "The winners are guaranteed a huge-selling number one single or album when the shows finish because there is a tide of goodwill towards them from the public.
"It makes sense that he is looking to sign up some of the runners-up because he can turn them into chart successes. However, he is a very astute businessman so I�m sure he is already thinking up ways of making George Sampson a star - there will be TV appearances and other performances, and don�t be surprised if he turns up in an advert some time soon."
Meanwhile, following the success of Britain's Got Talent and its US counterpart, America's Got Talent, Cowell has announced plans for a global series, World's Got Talent.
Simon says, "This global show will unite the best acts. It's going to be great.
"The Eurovision's not perfect - that's why we want to have a go at doing something that rivals it. But it's watched and enjoyed by millions of people around the world.
"There will be some countries' acts that make you laugh and cringe. They won't be to everyone's liking, but that's the whole point - it gets people talking and arguing. But I think we can get genuine talent."
